October: Black Cat Month
Black Cat and the Peril of Halloween. http://ow.ly/301wO
While October may be the favorite month of thousands of humans, who excitedly plan their costumes of spooks, vampires and monsters, in anticipation of Halloween, cats, particularly black cats, have little cause for celebration this month.
Much has been said about the more violent indignities that may be practiced on black cats at this time of year, but a more subtle cruelty has surfaced in recent years.

More Men Are Unabashedly Embracing Their Love of Cats
Sorry, Fido, It’s Just a Guy Thing
Mr. Fulrath is one of a growing number of single — and yes, heterosexual — men who seem to be coming out of the cat closet and unabashedly embracing their feline side. To that end, they are posting photographs and videos of their little buddies on YouTube and on Web sites like menandcats.com, and Twittering about them to anyone who will listen.

For Cats (and Owners) with Style
It’s not easy to find cat-scratching posts that add anything to a well-designed interior. So Jeanne Byers and Rochelle Klein, partners in an advertising agency, decided to create their own. One is shaped like a cat and can be hung on the wall or lain on the floor like a rug ($300); another resembles a modernist French chair ($575); and the third is a bull terrier-like sculpture ($1,200), left. All are custom made of sisal, and delivery takes about four weeks. Information: (917) 612-8180 or thecompanyofpets.com.

‘Catios’ Bring Cats Outdoors

Their cats feel the same way.
So some cat owners who would never dream of letting their pets roam free outside have come up with a creative compromise: an enclosed space — usually in the form of a screened-in porch or deck — that allows them to share the great outdoors.
Please don’t call it a cage. They prefer the term “catio.”

Pet-centric Design
Keeping pets happy helps prevent unwanted behaviors, said Kate Benjamin, who runs the blog Moderncat in Phoenix and recently created a line of cat products, like artfully shaped scratching posts. “Integrating pet-friendly design into your home makes for a more serene environment for both you and your pet,” Ms. Benjamin said.

The cat and bear best friends who simply can't bear to be apart.
As far as lifelong friendships go, Muschi thinks her large and loveable friend Maeuschen is the cat's pyjamas.
The feline, which struck up the unlikely friendship with the 40-year-old Asian bear eight years ago, now can't bear to be apart from her friend.
In fact, the pair are so close that zookeepers at Berlin Zoo had to reunite them after Muschi, or 'pussy' in German, pined for Maeuschen - 'little mouse' - after they were separated.

The Top 10 Pet-Owner Mistakes
Avoid common errors, and keep your four-legged pal healthy and well-behaved.
Why this is a mistake: That doggie in the window may be darling, but he might not be the right fit for your family or lifestyle.
How to avoid it: Fully inform yourself before you bring home a pet. Every dog or cat has its own needs, some of which are specific to the breed. Terriers tend to dig; Abyssinians explore and climb. If there’s a breed that interests you, read up on it (try the website of the American Kennel Club, at akc.org, or the Cat Fanciers Association, at cfainc.org), talk to owners, and get to know someone else’s Border collie or Persian. That said, not every dog or cat is typical of its breed, so “ask about the pet’s history, health, and temperament,” says Stephanie Shain, a director at the Humane Society of the United States. When dealing with a breeder, you should be shown where the pet was raised and meet his parents.

Human Foods to Avoid for Cats

Toxic food for cats: Onions, Garlic, & Related Root Vegetables, Green Tomatoes, Raw Potatoes, Chocolate, Grapes and Raisins. http://ow.ly/2TTjo
Let's face it: some cats are inveterate "bums" and will beg and plead most appealingly while you try to eat. While I will (rarely) give a cat a tidbit of chicken or turkey from my plate, it's a practice I don't encourage as a regular habit for a few reasons. First, because cats need the nutrients specifically provided for them in good, premium cat foods, and any "extras" that they consume will take away their appetites for their regular meals. A sliver of turkey or chicken from your dinner plate certainly won't kill a cat, but you're helping him develop bad habits. What happens when Aunt Phoebe comes for dinner and Simon jumps on her lap to scarf up her meal?

Fun Fact: Cat Was Not a "Cat" in 1760.
Male cats used to be called "rams" or "boars", however in 1760, an anonymous author wrote a book entitled "The Life & Adventures of a Cat" in which the central character was a male called Tom the Cat. This book was hugely popular & the name tom cat quickly replaced "ram" or "boar".

Green residents Auguste Mills, 12, and Lillie McCortney, 11, and Canton resident Maddie Wagler, 13, raised about $134 at a lemonade stand they organized this summer. The girls used the proceeds to have 10 feral cats spayed and neutered, according to Cindy Dauphin, a volunteer with Pawsibilities — The Humane Society of Greater Akron (HSGA).

Cats Who Chew
Some cats love to chew and whilst this habit can be a normal part of your pet’s development, when taken to extremes, it can become dangerous. If you start to worry for your pet’s health or safety, your cat insurance may be able to protect you financially from the costs of specialist treatment.
